I will be proposing, to the other Board of Finance members, that we should hire a full time tax attorney to work in the tax assessor’s office. I believe it will be well worth the investment, as the large companies’ leverage their high power attorney’s to persuade the tax assessor’s office into deals. The deals are very one sided and/or they are not fully considering the long term benefits/consequences of the situation. All of these deals directly impact the tax payers in Stamford, many have little tangible benefits, to the city.
The underfunding of the (5) different pensions and retiree healthcare (OPEB), this has been raised by me many times on the BOF and in media releases. As of only two weeks ago there has been a committee that was formed, to start addressing the long-term pension’s crisis. One of my recommendations to the committee is to add additional individuals to the (5) different pensions board as trustees, who have appropriate experience and knowledge of the different investments and asset classes. This is critical to avoiding a severe budget crisis in the near future for Stamford.
