Property Taxes – The Districts that provide net funding for the City’s operations should advocate for services they need and want without fear that it will appear politically incorrect. My commitment to constituents is that when asked to spend your tax dollars I will approach the request like I do when I spend my own dollars. I want to know if the request actually makes sense, whether or not we are following the rules (our own or those set at the State and Federal levels), how much it is going to actually cost, and what we expect to get in return. I resent a Mayor who blames prior administrations for his tax increases when he has been part of the problem since 1983.
Congestion/Traffic Speed/Development – Traffic issues are the second most common complaint I receive. We have more cars creating bottlenecks, driver frustration, and safety issues in our neighborhoods than ever before. I voted for signal timing improvement contract to improve flow on our major arteries hoping to reduce the traffic racing through our neighborhoods. I have helped educated residents on Zoning changes.
Roadway Quality – We paid $145K in November of 2015 for an independent, objective review of roadway quality in the City only to have it held up for 18 months personally by the Mayor. Mayor Martin just released the paving list he personally corrupted. Now that it is an election year we are finally beginning to see high profile streets paved; sadly not the worst streets.
My contact information has been publicly available since 2012. When constituents call for my help they have always received a response. I try to make sure I fully understand the issue. Then my response will be candid. If the request has merit I will do my best to help a resident achieve a favorable resolution. Please note it is not my intent to take ownership of your ideas. The Board of Representatives is a volunteer activity and as such I will expect help and support. Also, I do not assume every request has merit. My commitment to those I cannot come to agreement with is, I will not waste your time dancing around an item I cannot support.
Today the only political voice the City funds is the Mayor's. He does not adequately represent residents of District 18/Stamford. The only outbound communication vehicle I have found that does not get corrupted by the administration, and does not require self funding, is Letters to the Editor published by The Advocate.
Representatives are not provided the funding necessary to offer the kind of outreach this question suggests. In 2014 I led an effort to increase the funding made available to each representative for communication with constituents. I championed the issue because in 2012 I tried to introduce myself to constituents using the postage allowance. The funding and rules are both insufficient and inefficient. To get my message out I had to hand deliver my message to more than half of District 18.
