Yes, I absolutely support early voting in Connecticut. We should be doing everything we can to make it easier and more convenient for people to vote and remove barriers to voting. Many individuals are not able to make it to the polls on Election Day, due to a variety of reasons including work, health, and financial reasons, and early voting provides a convenient alternative that allows more people to gain access to the polls.
My top three priorities will be: 1) to champion economic growth through support for small businesses and job creation; 2) to stand up for Stamford schools and secure more funding and resources for our teachers and students; and 3) to work to improve our transportation infrastructure.
I fully support the transportation lockbox and strongly supported and advocated for its passage in the legislature. Since the Special Transportation Fund was created after the tragic Mianus River Bridge collapse in 1983, its funds have been depleted for a variety of reasons. (lower gas tax receipts, diverted funds for other purposes, and declining transportation revenues). As a result, our infrastructure is antiquated and crumbling and in desperate need of repair. Our aging infrastructure is a public safety issue, a quality of life issue for commuters, and a major hinderance for business growth in our state. The lockbox will ensure that funds intended for transportation are locked and safe so that they cannot be diverted for other purposes.
There are three ways I would address funding the state deficit. 1) Work on policies to grow our state's economy. While we have made progress, with a growth rate of 1.6 percent in the first quarter of 2018 and our unemployment rate dropping from 4.5 percent in January to 4.3 percent in August (and down from a high of 9.3 percent in 2010), we still have significant work to do to grow our state’s economy and recover all of the 119,000 jobs that were lost in CT in the 2008 recession. And the personal income tax makes up half of our state's revenue, thus job growth is essential to closing the deficit. 2) Call for more responsible and sensible spending within our means, while preserving programs for those who in need. 3) Work on innovative ways to grow our revenue without increasing taxes on the middle class. For example, looking at selling government buildings, tolling out of state trucks, saving on energy costs through increasing our use of clean energy, and attracting more businesses, jobs, and people to CT.
