The prevalence of instant communications and online sales has made it all too easy for unscrupulous individuals and dishonest merchants to engage in frauds and scams designed to deceive consumers. As a result, consumer protection is a critical function for the attorney general’s office. In addition to providing effective representation for the state Department of Consumer Protection in legal proceedings, I will take an active role relative to education and awareness, actively promoting consumer tips and advisories. Further, I will seek to establish an online, White Collar Crime Offender Registry to expose bad actors, similar to one created in Utah. The registry would combine the efforts of federal, state and local enforcement officials to thwart white collar criminals, providing consumers with another way to verify a vendor before they buy or invest. Most importantly, my attorney general’s office will be transparent and accessible, worthy of consumers’ and taxpayers’ trust.
